So last week was Mike's spring break, and we decided to head up to Amish country in Lancaster, PA. It's about a 4.5 hour drive, of which Jack was not a fan. He's such a stinker in the car. Luckily, we've recently discovered that he loves raisins, so his mouth was occupied for awhile. Amish country consists of a lot of Amish farms spread out between these little tiny towns along some country roads. It was beautiful! I imagine its beauty might be enhanced by warmer weather and a less grumpy toddler, but, nonetheless, it was pretty cool to see. There are 30,000 Amish in Lancaster County, making it I think the second largest Amish community in the US. Not too shabby, peeps . . . After about a 24 hour stay in PA, we headed down to Gainesville (VA), which is just south of DC to stay with Mike's aunt and uncle and their twin 10-year-old girls for a few days. They were so hospitable and so fun to hang out with, and it was great to relax in someone else's (beautiful) home. Here are some highlights of the trip:
-Getting a suite in a hotel so that we could put Jack down in the bedroom, shut the door, and then be able to watch tv and generally hang out not in utter darkness and silence until we went to bed. Totally worth the extra money.
-Visiting towns with names like Bird-in-Hand, Paradise, and, my personal favorite, Intercourse. No joke. Intercourse and Paradise are not right next to each other, which I thought was dumb, but then again maybe that's more realistic . . . j/k
-Having to slow down to pass a buggy on the road -Seeing an old Amish guy, beard and all, on a foot-powered scooter. OMG! -Admiring the amazing decorating done by Mike's aunt in her house; someday, we shall have a house of our own . .
-Going to the Air and Space Museum out by Dulles; they had full-size planes, shuttles, AND, the actual Enola Gay (the one that dropped the A-bomb on Hiroshima). Not sure if that should be as much of an attraction as it seemed to be, but it certainly was interesting to see it. Very cool museum!
-Seeing Avatar (no, not 3D) together but without Jack. Mike's aunt and uncle and daughters very graciously played with Jack all afternoon so we could see it. And, I have to admit, I was impressed! Yay for blue people!
-Returning to our home in time to put Jack down for a nap. After just an hour and a half in the car, we were so done with this kid. I think anyone who regularly travels with toddlers either wears earplugs or has a very different toddler than we have.
Anyway, hope you enjoy the photos! Jack's big things right now seem to be dancing and imitating everything we do. He dances to everything, including the sound the printer makes when it prints something. It's so cute! He even stomps his foot and twirls around. Also, he wants to do everything we do. When Mike does push-ups, Jack has to do them to. When I write a note on my hand (sorry Mom and Dad, you never succeeded in breaking me of that one), he wants to try to do it too. When daddy eats a cookie, Jack must also eat a cookie (no surprise there). He's also getting a lot more adventurous in his speech and says: "cool" and "wow" and "awesome" on a regular basis. He tries to say just about anything, even though were not sure where he's gotten somet things. He keeps saying something that sounds like "Oh sh@#" over and over, but I promise that we don't say that.

This the cutest kid in the WHOLE world (well, at least east of the Mississippi). His parents aren't half shabby either. You've made my day, Bec. I can hardly wait to see you.
Fun times! My children are kept happy with raisins as well..always grateful for those things that can make our trip a little easier and fun for us!
